We Flipped the ‘On’ Switch For Residential Service
For the first time in Orange County history, energy customers have a choice in how their power is sourced — a big move forward in helping to preserve valuable resources and create a more sustainable future.
Residential customers in Buena Park, Fullerton, Huntington Beach and Irvine can now access the benefits of Community Choice Energy through the Orange County Power Authority (OCPA). The initiative allows customers to decide how they participate in our collective effort to move towards renewable power.
How does it work? OCPA is tasked with purchasing renewable energy for consumers, while Southern California Edison (SCE) continues to transmit and distribute energy to homes and businesses. Participation is flexible. Customers can select from three renewable energy plans — Basic Choice, equal in cost to SCE, Smart Choice, which provides 69% renewable energy, or 100% renewable energy, which makes the most impact, but currently costs slightly more than SCE. Consumers can also choose to opt-out of OCPA at any time.
OCPA is a locally run, not-for-profit public agency committed to providing cleaner, renewable electricity choices at competitive rates, and investing in innovative programs that benefit residents, businesses, the environment, and the economy in our communities.
Following the successful commercial service launch earlier this year, OCPA is well on its way to providing renewable energy to 825,000 businesses and residents throughout Orange County —that’s the equivalent of taking 200,000 cars off the roads annually! By taking action now, we’re on our way to creating a healthier and more sustainable future.
