Five Ways to Go Plastic Free This July

At Orange County Power Authority, we believe in the power of choices to make a big impact, which is why we’re excited about Plastic Free July! So, what is Plastic Free July? Created by the Plastic Free Foundation in 2011, Plastic Free July is a yearly challenge that’s inspired 100 million people across 190 countries to eliminate plastic use for the month, with many committing to reducing plastic pollution beyond. It’s always a good time to reduce your single-use plastic waste at home, work or school.

Below are a few simple ways you can ditch single-use plastics for something more sustainable:

1.    Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

You can significantly reduce your consumption by reusing and recycling items. Whether you’re filling up your online cart or window shopping, ask yourself if you truly need it. When you do need to make a purchase, consider opting for thrifted finds over brand new products, be mindful to avoid plastic purchases, and choose local. On the flip side, reuse plastic items you already own if you can. If there are any you no longer need, take them to a secondhand store so they don’t end up in a landfill.

2.    Swap Single-Use Plastics

This summer, there are many ways you can swap single-use plastics. Going on a picnic? Invest in a picnic basket set! Take your guilt-free treats to the park and enjoy them by swapping plastic bags and wrap,  disposable plates and napkins for reusable containers, plates and cloth napkins. This isn’t the only change you can make. Instead of opting for plastic bags at the grocery store, grab a tote bag to reduce waste. There are also many reusable alternatives to cutlery, straws, and other single-use items, including bamboo cutlery and stainless steel straws.

3.    Skip the Plastic Packaging

Look for goods that come with minimal or no plastic, and support brands that prioritize sustainability by offering eco-friendly options. You’ll be surprised how easy it can be to avoid products packaged in single-use plastic. When buying nuts and grains in bulk, bring your own bags; or shop at wholesale stores, where they give you cardboard boxes instead of plastic bags. It doesn’t have to stop there. Did you know that storing your fruits and vegetables in a mason jar over single-use plastic containers can keep them fresh longer? Talk about a win-win.

4.    Clean With Purpose

The next time you’re replacing your set of dish cleaning brushes or towels, consider switching from synthetic to natural fibers. There are tons of eco-friendly alternatives on the market that can do just as good of a cleaning job. You can even find bamboo toothbrushes these days!

5.    Spread the Word

Whether you’re rallying your co-workers, friends, or engaging in a group meet up, there’s strength in numbers. Bring your favorite people in on the cause. The best place to start is by spreading the word about Plastic Free July and inviting everyone you know to join the challenge.
