Fall into Action: Simple Tips for a More Sustainable Season

Fall is here—the evening air is crisper, sweaters are on, and pumpkins are everywhere. 🍂 But did you know that this season is also the perfect time to take small steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle? At Orange County Power Authority (OCPA), we’re all about finding simple, practical ways to make a difference in everyday life. So, whether you’re cooking up some cozy fall meals or prepping your home for this festive time of year, here are easy ways to be more sustainable this season!

1. Cozy Up With an Electric Slow Cooker 🍲

Fall is soup season, but before you fire up that gas stove, consider using an electric slow cooker instead. Why? Gas stoves can actually pollute your indoor air—something most of us don’t realize. Electric slow cookers on the other hand are not only energy-efficient but also safer for your home. Plus, they’re perfect for slow-cooking those hearty stews and fall soups, saving you energy while giving you all the cozy comfort food vibes.

2. Compost Your Pumpkins 🎃

After Halloween, don’t throw your pumpkin in the trash. Compost it! Pumpkins are full of nutrients that can help your garden thrive, and composting is an easy way to turn Halloween waste into something valuable. If you’ve never composted before, it’s easier than you think—just remove the seeds, cut the pumpkin into smaller pieces, and toss it into your compost bin. Your garden will thank you next year!

3. Bundle Up Instead of Turning Up the Heat 🧣

We get it—when the temperature drops, it’s tempting to crank up the thermostat. But instead of relying on the heater, try bundling up in layers. Throw on a cozy sweater, grab a blanket, and you might not need to adjust the heat at all. Not only does this help save energy, but it can also lower your energy bills—a win-win!

4. Switch to LED Lights for Those Longer Nights 💡

As the days get shorter, we rely more on lighting in the evenings. If you haven’t already switched to LED bulbs, now’s the perfect time. LEDs use 75% less energy and last way longer than traditional bulbs, meaning you’ll save both energy and money as the nights get longer.

5. Support Local Sustainability 🌱

Fall is also a great time to get involved in local sustainability efforts. Whether it’s checking out your local farmers’ market for fresh, organic produce or participating in a community clean-up event, small actions like these can have a big impact on the health of your community. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with your neighbors and support local businesses!

At OCPA, we believe that even small changes can make a big difference. By trying out some of these fall sustainability tips, you’re not only helping the environment, but you’re also creating a healthier home and saving money along the way. Ready to start making a difference? Stay tuned for more tips on how you can live a little greener this season!
